Codel is an authentication service that proves the authenticity of any digital data and which can be used to protect digital intellectual property rights. The challenge is to create a mechanism that allows this so that the owner of the rights receives a reward, even if his work is heavily pirated or ‘shared’. You can use Codel to prove the priority date of your work. Codel creates a digital fingerprint or ‘Codelmark’ of your original work so that when you use our software it is stored indefinitely on the Codel database. Codel provides a number of benefits:
- It enables you to show when the work was created
- It enables you to assign the intellectual property to someone else if you so choose
- The Codelmark can be used to catalogue and identify the work
However, it is important to note that if you do use Codel to mark your work the following points apply:
- Where plagiarism occurs there remains a need for an independent authority to adjudicate on similarity and Codel is not a solution to this.
- Neither is Codel a solution to piracy.It will still be possible for unscrupulous people to acquire a copy of the original work and either make unauthorised copies or minutely alter the work so that it registers a different Codelmark.
