Product Tagging - Fibertag

Fibertag

Fibertag is a trackable forensic tagging technology developed by the Ascent Group. Barcodes are printed onto film and the film is sliced thinly so that we have a microscopic barcode. The width can vary from a few hundredths of an inch to about 1/16th - at which size the barcodes can be read by standard readers. One commercial use being developed is a barcoded tear tape for cellophane wrapped products ranging from cigarettes to CDs.

As the codes can be randomly assigned in the same way as a VR and can be unique within a given product line, Fibertag doubles as both a forensic tag and a tracking marker. For example, if a small quantity of the smallest fibers are mixed with explosives (at the rate of a few grams to each tonne of explosive), tests have shown that the fibers can be recovered and read after the explosion - providing full traceability to the source of the explosives.
