With no record company, publisher or manager behind them, both confess to looking forward to the challenge. The motive, says Carol, is purely a creative one, but it means that they are in uncharted territory.
Because of this both Carol and Ron are using a newly developed form of digital fingerprinting called Codel to encode and protect all of their material. The new technology creates a unique code against the digital file, which is registered by a third party and is able to prove authenticity and provenance.
Explains Ron Rogers: “We are creating a new model for writing and creating – it is an experiment. We intend to do everything ourselves without the traditional support infrastructure so there are lots of practical issues to address. This makes Codelmarking our songs all the more important, since we don’t have control over distribution channels, and it provides us with a measure of protection against plagiarism. The web is a big place and one’s music can crop up anywhere. It will provide peace of mind at this stage.”
The technology has already been successfully trialled by young musicians at Leicester University who have been impressed by its ease of use and flexibility. It can also be used for other digital data such as images and documents.
Adds Ron Rogers: “We are determined to make it work. The web has opened up huge new possibilities for artists and what is great for us is that we are not starting from scratch, there is a backlog of music already there and people know us. The main issues are that we want to write songs as and when we want and quickly make them accessible to the public ...we’ll wait and see what happens …”
‘Just Dream’ will be available on all download sites including i-Tunes from September 2nd.
