CODEL LAUNCHES PROOF OF OWNERSHIP SERVICE FOR DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHERS

One of the greatest problems faced by digital photographers is that their images may be stolen, misused or manipulated.   Codel Image Fingerprinting provides an easy to use and effective means for them to prove that an image is theirs and whether or not it has been changed since it was taken.

Codel is attending the annual meeting of the National Press Photographers Association in the US, Convergence08, where it is launching a pioneering new service that promises to help thousands of photographers to protect their work from illegal use.

One of the greatest problems faced by digital photographers is that their images may be stolen, misused or manipulated.   Codel Image Fingerprinting provides an easy to use and effective means for them to prove that an image is theirs and whether or not it has been changed since it was taken.

The way it works is that the photographer downloads a simple piece of software to their PC which converts the photographic file into a unique fingerprint, or Codelmark.  This Codelmark (not the photograph itself), contains the time, date and ownership details of the file and is sent to Codel’s own database.  A permanent, legal record of ownership is therefore created, which can be verified by anyone.

Moreover, Codel protects throughout the life of the picture, in that even if an image is retouched it can be re-Codelmarked so as to keep the audit trail up to date.

Explains Codel’s Martin Warner:   “Photography and publishing have come a long way in a relatively short space of time, and with the changes in work flow and production methodology come changes in the way photographers need to protect their work from theft and unauthorized modification - particularly in the fast moving and cut-throat commercial world.  We feel that Codel Image Fingerprinting fills a major gap, in that for the first time it enables photographers to prove beyond any doubt that a specific image is theirs, to a legal standard and which is acceptable in court.”
